As a health coach, I meet people at different stages in their health journey. One thing they all have in common is that they needed guidance to begin living a healthier lifestyle.
If you’re wondering how to get started, here are 7 tips and strategies that will help you begin your journey:
1. Eat more real food.
That means fruits, vegetables, herbs, and grains. The foods that grow in the ground have wonderful plant nutrients (phytonutrients) that our bodies need for optimal health. Half of your plate should be foods that qualify as “real”.
2. Read the labels of anything you are going to put in your body.
Every processed food product has an ingredient label. The healthiest foods are the ones that have the fewest ingredients. And if you don’t recognize an ingredient or can’t pronounce it, choose something else. Many processed foods contain chemicals and additives that are toxic to the body.
3. Drink more water.
Hopefully, you have already stopped drinking soda because it is full of chemicals and lots of sugar or artificial sweeteners. Water is what our bodies need to move our blood, nutrients, and waste. It’s easy to become dehydrated if you don’t drink a lot of water every day. The rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day. Figure out the number of ounces you need and keep track.
4. Reduce the number of foods you eat regularly that cause inflammation in the body.
The problem with inflammation is that it is the underlying cause of many common chronic diseases, including; obesity, arthritis, diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Some of the top inflammatory foods are; sugar, dairy products, meat, hydrogenated oils, artificial sweeteners, wheat products and alcohol.
5. Move your body.
Our bodies were meant to move, but that doesn’t mean you have to work out at a gym every day. Any kind of movement is great –walking, taking the stairs, doing some sit-ups while watching television. What you want to avoid is not moving i.e. sitting for long periods of time or staying in bed all day. Movement creates circulation inside the body, which is necessary for all of our organs to work properly. In addition, if you can add some cardio and strength training to your activities, you will be in even better shape.
6. Get sufficient sleep.
In order to function at our best, our bodies require downtime in the form of deep sleep. Many people function on too little sleep. The optimal amount of sleep for an adult is 7 to 8 hours of restful, uninterrupted sleep. If you have difficulty falling asleep, add some rituals to your nighttime routine that will help, such as a bath; listening to music, or reading a light novel.
7. Practice relaxation.
Most people complain about feeling a lot of stress in their daily lives. One thing we can all do to reduce the feeling of stress is learn how to relax. There are many techniques you can learn that will quickly create a sense of relaxation and calm in the body. The options include: meditation; yoga; deep breathing; writing in a [gratitude journal]; and listening to nature sounds.
I totally agree with Troy. Those are the main steps to see a long lasting life change. But you should also know that making changes is not easy so keep trying, be persistent.
