Here are the steps and benefits to sleep and be creative. This perspective might help you to be more productive on a daily basis.

We tend to think that nights are more productive since there should be fewer people or fewer distractions, but this isn’t always true when we talk about creativity.

Creativity is all about our brain and at night our brain will or should be exhausted, that’s why our brain ask so desperately for food especially fats and carbohydrates because it’s a fast way to obtain energy.

Now, if what you want is fewer distractions to work then wake up early because mornings are a more peaceful environment.

If you are a creative person that usually stays late at night and love to wake up at midday, well.. there’s nothing I can say to change your mind. After all, habits are habits.

But maybe you’re a person who loves progress, in that case, this perspective will help you to be more productive with your day.

As you can see is not only to sleep 7-8 hours but also to find a perfect time to start sleeping. I have found that the perfect hour for me is at 9 p.m., but it might change for you depending on your timezone.

So I recommend you to choose the perfect time to start sleeping on the first 3-4 hours of the night. Especially if you want to take advantage of the first morning hours which are perfect to work.

When I work starting at 5 a.m. I usually have finished everything by 11 a.m., so I get the rest of the day for myself to enjoy. That’s why I recommend so much the early hours.

When I was studying math, I needed to be very creative to find a new perspective to solve problems. Sometimes I couldn’t find a solution so I went to sleep and it might sound weird but when I wake up I already had the answer in my mind.

The reason for that is easy to understand. At night our minds are loaded with lots of data from the day, so while you sleep the data is being organized and when you wake up it will be easier to connect the data in a creative way.

Sleep is a tactic well known when you have a blocked mind.

Sometimes you will have a creative dream that will inspire you. Although some people says that we always have dreams during our REM periods but we usually forget about them.

In any case, the REM periods will clean your mind like cleaning a canvas to start again. That’s why it might be easier for you to obtain new perspectives and new ideas after sleep.

This is not a new theory or a new tendency. A lot of creative people highlight their sleeping time and are very careful about it.

Actually, most successful people tend to sleep 7 hours than 4-5 hours.

Probably you’re thinking about those that sleep 4-5 hours and are successful. Well, those are a few and also usually have a short lifespan because one key to longevity is a life filled with a healthy sleepy habit.

 

How to get enough sleep

Now, this is very important to start making some changes in your sleep habit so you will be able to notice the difference in productivity.

The list is simple:

  1. Schedule your sleep time. It can be flexible when you are starting, don’t worry if one day you are like an hour late.
  2. Avoid caffeine products at night.
  3. Get your last meal 2-3 hours before sleep. After that last meal only drink water or eat fruits like banana or apples.
  4. Create the best sleep-friendly environment. Avoid electronic devices and lights.
  5. Find your favorite way to get sleep fast. In case you find difficult to sleep, read a book, listen to a [podcast], practice meditation with deep breathing, etc.
  6. Experiment until you feel comfy.

 

I believe it was Bill Gates who said that for the most creative ideas he sleep like 8-9 hours but for the hard work applying those ideas he only sleeps like 6-7 hours.

You should know that there will be days where you might be so passionate that you will not be able to sleep. And that’s fine if those are only especial occasions.

What matters is what you do on a daily basis.
