Hey! On the last 30 years there have been 9000 new artificial food additives and here are some of those toxic ingredients on daily foods. Warning! Some are really crazy.

There’s research only on 2 per 900 components that are used in products around the globe. And that research is so basic that we don’t even know the side effects on long periods of time.

So it’s shocking how we are still alive consuming things like that.

I was delaying this article because I wanted to make more research about it, and I did. So here it is.

Toxic ingredients on daily foods

You should know that these are legal ingredients, so you could find them in several products everywhere.

1– Gelatin

Gelatin is found in several products like frosted cereals, yogurt, candy, creams, and more. All those are gelatin-based products.

Now the awful part. Gelatin is obtained from boiling skin, bones and cartilage from animals. Usually, it’s from pigs but it changes depending on the purpose of the gelatin. Years ago chefs obtained gelatin through boiling colacez which are on fish bladders.

The toxic part is that is a highly processed product, and that without considering the behind the scene production quality. In any way, it isn’t good for our health.

2– Mechanically separated meat

Firstly, I’m not vegan nor vegetarian. I love meat and chicken only Peruvian dishes well cooked, so I only eat them like once a month and sometimes even less. It’s just that I’m very demanding with its quality because like it or not, meat is bad for our health.

Anyway, mechanically separated meat is leftovers blended with high pressure. So you will find bones, cartilage and other things on the final paste.

It is used in several products like hot dogs and sausages.

The toxic part is that due to the risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad cow disease, mechanically separated meat is no longer allowed in many countries. But besides that, I’m not fine eating the leftovers of an animal, I’m definitely not a scavenger.

3– Carbon monoxide

This odorless gas can be deadly and yet it’s used to pack ground beef and some fish like tilapia or tuna because it helps them retain their fresh look.

The same gas that every car expels in contamination of the environment is used to be injected into plastic wraps after all the air is sucked out to block the process of oxidation that can turn pink meat into brown meat.

Some say that it’s safe for human consumption, but really? after all the environmental problems and claims against carbon monoxide?

4– Shellac

Shiny treats like jelly beans, candy corn, and other candies are coated with shellac to make it shiny. You won’t find shellac on the ingredients list because it might be under the name of “confectioner’s glaze”.

But, what is that? Well, shellac is a sticky substance obtained from secretions of the female Thailand insect that is called Kerria Lacca.

Sorry for that, I know it is disgusting.

5– Saltwater injections

This practice is called plumping, where manufactures inject salt and other ingredients into raw meat to enhance flavor and increase the weight of the meat before it’s sold.

That’s toxic because makes meat even more processed and if you don’t know how sodium affects our health you should probably google that.

6– Pink Slime

Here we’re again with meat leftovers. This time they melt the fat away and spin them into a centrifuge. Then you would get a pinkish substance that is treated with Ammonia which is a strong chemical found in household cleaning products to kill germs.

Yummy. Toxic and deadly yummy.

7– Bisphenol A

I’ve talked about BPA a lot on several posts because it produces cancer and produces hormone-based diseases. So there’s the reason why it’s toxic.

But if you didn’t know, it’s present on canned products, bottles, containers, and other plastic products.

BPA article: [What is bisphenol A?]

8– Castoreum

This is another thing considered by the FDA as GRAS (generally recognized as safe) but if you ask me it doesn’t sound right.

Castoreum is a food flavoring extracted from the castor sac scent glands which are located near the anus. Now you can understand why it’s so expensive.

Although it’s more common in perfume than in actual foods, you can find it as a “natural flavoring” on the ingredient list. Yeah right, very natural flavoring.

Some foods with castoreum are raspberry flavored candy, strawberry/vanilla/raspberry ice-cream, alcoholic beverages, baked goods, gelatin, pudding, soft candy, frozen dairy, hard candy and chewing gum.

9– Silicon Dioxide

If you think you don’t know silicon dioxide, think twice, because we humans also call it sand. And it’s used in salts, soups, and coffee creamer. The reason is that it absorbs atmospheric humidity.

Now, it’s toxic because… Well, it’s not meant to be food.

10– Carmine

You can found Carmine in ice cream, skittles, lemonade, grapefruit juice, and much others. After all, it’s a red food-coloring.

The disgusting part is that it’s a food-coloring obtained from boiling cochineal bugs, which are a type of beetle. And you said that you’ll never eat insects… well, you have…

The toxic part on all this type of foods related to animals is that our body is not designed to process this components and even less if it’s so processed.

11– Cellulose

Actually this is one that I’ve seen the most in several cheese products, although it can also be found in ice cream. It’s used to keep the shredded cheese apart.

It’s obtained from wood pulp and cotton. This one is more natural at least but still, we cannot digest cellulose, so it’s not useful and can produce digestive problems or make them worst. Actually, cheese itself can produce digestive problems, so…

12– Liquid smoke

Liquid smoke is made by burning sawdust and capturing the components in either water or a vegetable oil. The resulting product can be purchased and added to sauces and other foods to give it that smoky flavor.

It’s added to barbecue products, baked beans, hot dogs, bacon, and beef jerky, among others.

The toxic part? Well, think that you will be eating the leftovers of burned wood.

It’s finished. Actually, there are a lot more toxic ingredients that are available in the original Health post that I added as a source at the bottom. One of them is antibiotics.

Now that we know all of this, the only recommendation that I can give is the same as always: Eat natural and fresh foods. Because humans produce the craziest things, like the flavoring out of castor’s ass.
